![]() ![]() Alternative paid interface skins and announcers were also released, as well as StarCraft: Cartooned, a reskin of Remastered using visuals from the StarCrafts series of humorous videos by Carbot Animations based on the game. The game was also refreshed with StarCraft: Remastered on August 14, 2017, which is in essence a paid DLC with graphics and additional campaign visuals done by Lemon Sky Studios, ranked multiplayer access, a zooming function and unlocked widescreen resolution support up to and including 4K Ultra HD. ![]() ![]() The game was overhauled technologically, using different formats, but older methods of enabling custom resolutions no longer worked and ranked multiplayer access was locked for free users. The game was re-launched with version 1.18.0 on April 18, 2017, at which time the digital release on became freeware in its entirety. This would end up being the final patch applicable to the retail version of the game. A compatibility release, patch 1.17.0, was silently released in July 2016, but was not active on the official servers. The initial official support period for the game lasted until 2009 and patch 1.16.1, during which time the balancing was refined, the replay system became more reliable compared to the launch version, and new maps were added to the ladder map pool. It offers both long singleplayer campaigns and a popular multiplayer mode.įollowing the game's initial release in March 1998 and that of the Brood War expansion pack in December 1998, StarCraft received a very large multiplayer following, particularly in South Korea, which affected the longevity of its support cycle. Having tested the mod briefly before filing this report, I would argue that this is an entirely new way to experience the game, if only because of how easy it is to follow Burton's bold, primary-color designs as battles get hectic and Zerglings rush en masse.StarCraft is a sci-fi RTS game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. In those, you'll see Burton's full treatment look its silliest as the game's original, dramatic music and voice acting play out over childish art. Otherwise, you'll find a ridiculous amount of redrawn cartoon material-even in the between-mission briefings. (That's in essence how the original Remastered release works, anyway.) And unlike Carbot's 2016 StarCraft 2 mod, which only redrew assets within that sequel's limited arcade mode, today's new mod smothers the full StarCraft Remastered experience in Burton's redrawn characters.Ī few original assets remain, like FMV sequences and some interstitial art at the beginning of each campaign. Advertisementįurther Reading StarCraft Remastered devs unveil price, explain how much is being rebuilt Burton says that Blizzard's work on StarCraft Remastered paved the way for his mod to become a reality, since the updated engine supports a complete sprite swap without disrupting the core gameplay. In fact, they saw their gameplay world premiere last month at an official StarCraft tournament in South Korea, where pro players tested the mod and confirmed that, yes, silly as it looks, this mod otherwise delivers pure SC: Brood War action. (Carbot's YouTube channel also includes unofficial animated series based on Blizzard game series Diablo and WarCraft.)Īs you can see in the above gallery, all of Burton's existing designs have been translated into the working game in their silly, bulbous, flat-shaded glory. Instead, it transforms every single graphical element in the game, from menus to sprites to between-mission briefings, to look like the Carbot Animations animated series "StarCrafts," now in its seventh season on YouTube. The Cartooned DLC does not add any new gameplay or mechanical content to the StarCraft Remastered package. Specifically, StarCraft: Cartooned looks like a Carbot Animations cartoon-because the YouTube channel in question, operated by Canadian artist and animator Jonathan Burton, was tapped to create Blizzard's first full cosmetic overhaul mod for a retail game. It redraws every single piece of art in the classic RTS game to look and animate like a children's cartoon, without otherwise changing the core gameplay. StarCraft: Cartooned is now live at Blizzard's online store as an official $10 add-on to 2017's StarCraft Remastered. This is not a prank or a proof of concept. ![]()
